Kolikat or (Kolkata), the "Paris of the East", is
a medley of moods, styles, cultures, politics, industry & commerce. Job Charnok,
an agent of East India Company, is attributed with foundation of Kolikata or
(Kolkata), as he first set up a trading post at Sutanati.1698 was a milestone for
the East India Company, which bought the Zamindar rights (right to
collect land revenues) of the three villages of Sutanati, Kalikata and Govindapur.
In 1696, Old Fort William was established and this was considered to be the origin of Kolikata
or (Kolkata) and the name was derived from Kalikata, one of the three constituent
villages of Kolikata or (Kolkata).
Kolikata or (Kolkata), went on to be known as the showpiece
capital of the British Raj, and the greatest colonial city of the Orient. It
became a leading center of Trade and Commerce and a port for east bound vessels. Fortune
seekers from across the Globe flocked to Kolkata, to reap the benefits
of trading boom in eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, leading to rapid
urbanisation of the city. But Kolikata did not spell only trade
and commerce, it was also the city of Nawabs and
palaces, of Zamindars and baijis, of Mujras
and mushairas, of Arstists and craftsmen, it infact
became a home to rich artistic tradition.
